Outreach Efforts

Since the task force was formed in June 2000, its members and staff have organized roundtable discussions with various stakeholders including judges, county supervisors, probation officers, public defenders, and district attorneys.

Probationer Comments

The task force facilitated roundtable discussions with adult and juvenile probationers in three counties in California to learn from probationers themselves which services they have found to be useful, and to ask their opinions as to how probation can be improved. Members of the task force visited a northern rural county, a central suburban county, and an urban southern county. General themes and probationer comments from the discussions are summarized.

Surveys

Soon after it was created, the task force hired a consultant to conduct a written survey of probation stakeholders (judges, probation officers, county supervisors, district attorneys, and public defenders) from most of California’s 58 counties, in whic h information regarding agency staffing and workload; probation services; goals and priorities of probation departments; and methods of appointing and evaluating the Chief Probation Officer was gathered and analyzed.
