In California, all that is necessary to trigger further ICWA inquiry is a suggestion of Indian status: according to Welf & I C §224.3(b)(1), “reason to know” that the child is an Indian child exists if an interested person has provided information suggesting that the child is a member or eligible for membership in a tribe or that one of the child’s parents, grandparents, or great-grandparents was a member of a tribe.
