Federal Register directory. Through the BIA, the Secretary of the Interior publishes in the Federal Register a nationwide list of federally recognized tribes’ designated tribal agents for service of notice, with their contact information. At this writing, the direct URL is http://www.bia.gov/cs/groups/public/documents/text/idc012540.pdf. The list is presented first by region and then by tribal affiliation. (California tribes are primarily found in the Pacific Region. However, some, such as the Colorado River, Fort Mojave, Quechan, and Washoe Tribes, are in the Western Region.)
NOTE: The information in the list of tribal agents published in the Federal Register may be out of date; nonetheless, ICWA notice must go to the contact it provides for each potential tribe in a case. (71 FedReg 43788.)
California Department of Social Services directory. CDSS’s Division of Children and Family Services (www.childsworld.ca.gov) publishes a list of contact information for U.S. tribes that is not separated into regions. At this writing, the direct URL is www.childsworld.ca.gov/Res/pdf/CDSSTribes.pdf.
NOTE: This list may be more up to date than the BIA lists and can be very useful for its historical references; however, it is not recognized in the federal statute or regulations. It should be used in conjunction with the Federal Register directory.
