§8.11 Exclusive Use of Community Property After Separation

A spouse who has exclusive use of a community residence or community property business after separation until the community no longer holds an interest must reimburse the community for the reasonable value of the use. [See Marriage of Watts (1985) 171 CA3d 366, 374; Marriage of Jeffries (1991) 228 CA3d 548, 553, 555.] These reimbursements to the community are sometimes called "Watts charges."
