TECHNICAL NOTE

This course works best in Microsoft Internet Explorer 4 (or above). You will need Macromedia Flash Player 6 (or above) in order to view the Previews and Activities.

Your browser preferences MUST be set to "JavaScript enabled" in order to take this online course. In Microsoft Internet Explorer, this preference is found in Tools>Internet Options: click on "Security" tab, then click on "Custom Level." In the Settings Box, check "Enable" under "Scripting>Active Scripting." Click "OK" twice to close the settings windows.

To increase the text size, go to the View button on your browser toolbar and click Text Size (click Text Zoom in Netscape).

NAVIGATION

The course text is presented in sections 1.01 through 4.03. Although it is preferable to start at the beginning and complete each part consecutively, the navigation tools allow you to jump from one part to another according to your needs.

You can navigate through the course in several ways. Part titles are listed on the left side of the screen. Holding your cursor over any Part title reveals a list of sections for that Part. Clicking on any section title takes you to the beginning of that section. At the top and bottom of each page, there are links to the next page and previous page. You can also click on Table of Contents to view the outline of all headings; clicking on a heading will take you to that section.

At the top and bottom of each page is a toolbar with links to:

• Intro: Takes you to the first page of the course.
• How to Use This Course: Takes you to this page.
• Resource Materials: Provides links to the attached job aids and glossary.
• Review: Opens a separate window containing all the review questions.
• Evaluation: Takes you to the course evaluation form.
• Exit: Quits the course.

SOURCE MATERIALS

Citations to code sections and court rules are linked to source materials. Click on any underligned citation to quickly read the governing authority. References to Judicial Council forms are linked to online PDFs. Commonly used terms are highlighted in orange; a definition appears in a pop-up window when you place your cursor over a highlighted term.

Related Resources listed in the left column and referenced throughout the course may be printed out. These include a net income chart and a glossary.

SPECIAL FEATURES

To access any of the following special features, click on the appropriate icon in the course:

Preview Consists of a game in which you are given a definition of a term used in the upcoming Part. You are asked to guess the word within a certain number of tries.
Tip Click on the Tip Icon to see practical advice or additional points relating to the text you just read.
Caution Click on the Caution Icon to alert you to critical steps or prohibited actions.
How Would You Rule? This icon takes you to a hypothetical situation applying a principle from the text. You are asked to make a decision and then told whether your answer was correct and the reasoning behind the answer.
Example The Example Icon takes you to an illustration of a principle about which you just read.
Activity Identify each potential source of gross income as an item you must consider or an item you have discretion to consider.
Q&A When you click on the Question and Answer Icon, you will hear and read a question about an aspect of the text you just read. Click on the answer link to hear and read the answer.
Review The Review Icon takes you to review questions located at the end of each Part. By clicking on an answer, you will see if it is correct and the reasoning behind the correct answer.
