§2.09 Service on Corporation or Entity

previous page next page

To verify that service on a corporation or other entity was proper, refer to the following statutes:

Claim and order forms may also be served on a corporation or other entity, including a public entity, through substituted service; that is, a copy may be left during usual office hours at

  • the office of the entity, or
  • if no physical address is known, at the entity’s usual mailing address, other than a U.S. Postal Service post office box, with the person who is apparently in charge of the place. [CCP §§116.340(a)(3), 415.20(a).] Methods for serving businesses are outlined in form SC-104C.

For service to be completed, a copy of the claim and order must be mailed by first-class mail, postage prepaid, to the person to be served at the place where a copy of the claim was left. When service is effected by leaving a copy at a mailing address, it must be left with a person at least 18 years of age, and that person must be informed of its contents. [CCP §§116.340(a)(3), 415.20(a).]
