§5.11 Providing Interpreters and Other Assistants

If you determine that a party cannot properly present his or her claim or defense and needs assistance, you may allow another individual to assist that party. [CCP §116.540(l).]

Caution Click

If you determine that a party does not speak or understand English sufficiently to comprehend the proceedings or give testimony, and needs assistance, you may permit another individual (other than an attorney or a child) to interpret for that party. [CCP §116.550(a).] If an interpreter is not available, you must postpone the first hearing one time to allow the party the opportunity to obtain help. Any additional continuances are at your discretion. [CCP §116.550(d).]
