You must be cautious and avoid letting the resident manager or a representative of a property management company without proper authority sue in his or her own name or make appearances for a self-represented plaintiff. That would constitute the unauthorized practice of law. Distinguish this situation, however, from an appearance by a manager or another person as a percipient witness. If the plaintiff is proper, anyone with firsthand knowledge may testify but may not cross-examine or object.
