Addiction

Methamphetamine is the most powerfully addictive drug we know, even more so than marijuana or alcohol. Meth can be smoked, snorted, eaten, or injected. Meth gives intense sensations, often leading to immediate addiction as a result of the release of high levels of dopamine into the section of the brain that controls feelings of pleasure.

Using meth a lot can result in a tolerance for the drug. So users may take higher doses of the drug, take it more frequently, or change how they use it to try to continue to get high. People who stop using meth have severe withdrawal symptoms, including depression, anxiety, fatigue, paranoia, aggression, and an intense craving for the drug. Psychotic symptoms, such as hallucinations and delusions, like seeing or feeling insects crawling on the skin, can sometimes persist for months or years. The potential for suicide is high after one stops using meth.
